Old School Meets New School...I remember the very first time I saw Royce Gracie in an Ultimate Fighting match. It was the first time they aired an Ultimate Fighting program. It WAS the very first Ultimate Fight.
To those of us that understand that the sport is more than just beating the crap out of each other. That it is a chess match. A test of mixed martial arts fighting styles. That the two guys in the ring have been studying their craft for many years. That they know what is on the line. To those of us...tonight will be a great pay-per-view fight between Matt Hughes and Royce Gracie.
Gracie created Ultimate Fighting. Well, that's figurative speech. He built the sport in the ring...not as an organizer. He's undefeated. He showed the rest of us what Ju Jitsu can do to both quick and strong opponents alike. He taught us how to defeat opponents with their own clothing (ah la chocking his opponent with their own gi). He showed us the armlock submission.
Matt Hughes is the current Walterweight Champion with an unprecedented 40-4 record. He is the pinnacle of what the sport is today. Matt can win any fight in one punch. You thought Mike Tyson was good. Please.
Tonight...old school will face new school. No predictions. I'm just going to enjoy this one as someone who's had martial arts in his family his whole life. May the best fighter win.
